¿Puede La Cólera mejorar el rendimiento deportivo?
Dra. Patricia Wightman

Can Anger Enhance Sports Performance?
In the Argentine National training Center, department of Sports psychology, the role of the Sport Psychologist is to provide support services (for clinical issues and performance enhancement) to a wide variety of athletes in different sports. During twenty years, athletes were assessed ,taught and trained with the conventional mental preparation skills; anxiety control, imagery, visualization, goal setting, positive self talk, focus,(with the aid of sports vision) confidence and under certain circumstances EMDR. During the past twelve years (three Olympic Games) other factors have received added attention.  For example, we have found a large number of different Sports with the POMS pre-performance double Iceberg Profile  (where Anger and Vigor are elevated) ,and the confirmation of good results in these competitions. Thus, despite traditional belief that anger impedes peak performance, it was concluded that instrumental anger must be interpreted in a positive manner.  As a result, we have worked with different ways of getting the athletes triggered so as to add this energy to their performance.  In sports where anger is not useful we have worked to lower the levels and also add to better performances thus getting an iceberg profile.
The primary purpose of this study was to help international level athletes further understand  and train their emotional tendencies, so as to augment or decrease their arousal performance in their specific sports.  We also assisted in their recuperating their post performance affective state with the utilization of specific counseling techniques from their skills repertoire.
Athletes that compete in sports that require high psychophysiological reactions for best ever performance and sports that require lower psychophysiological reactions were examined utilizing  positive-negative affect (PNA) testing, Brums and POMS “double Iceberg” and biofeedback.   Combat sports were not included in this study.  Findings of how anger can enhance performance will be presented
